Questions
What CheeTag does to your files, what it needs and what is still open.
Does CheeTag change my existing files?
Not in the default mode. The source is only read, and the result grows in a new folder next to it. If you don't have the space for that, you can clean up directly in the original folder — then nothing is deleted, it is moved to a holding folder, and every step is in the journal and can be undone.
Which formats does it understand?
MP3, FLAC and M4A are read and tagged. Older formats such as WMA and APE are recognised; how they are handled is a setting.
Does it re-encode my music?
No. What is FLAC stays FLAC, what is MP3 stays MP3. Conversion only happens where a format is barely playable anywhere — and even then only with notice.
Do I need accounts with other services?
For identification by fingerprint, a free key from AcoustID. MusicBrainz and the Cover Art Archive need none. Without a key CheeTag still runs — just without the fingerprint.
Where does my data go?
Nowhere. There is no account and no cloud. Only the music services are asked, and they are asked about tracks, not about you. The keys live in the operating system's vault, not in a text file.
What will it cost?
Nothing. CheeTag will be free of charge.
When will it be ready?
That is not decided yet — CheeTag is built in spare time. How far along it is stands on the development status page.
